Great article, David! Having been a refugee from both of the institutional systems you referenced (health care and higher education) this article really resonated with me. I try not to get caught up with the vanity metrics but it can be hard not to. It's important for me to remind myself of why I decided to do this in the first place and articles like this help me with that. It has everything to do with what you talk about in your letters: a career that nourishes my soul, that supports my creativity and my unique contribution, and creates a vehicle for me to truly support people in a way that I never felt I was able to in the institutions. Hopefully this vision comes to fruition as I continue to plug away at it.
Thanks for this reminder David. I've been in Social Network since X was still called Twittr, and the evolution the those platforms from a nice community place to a dopamine joint is very disturbing. I'm trying to be authentic with my creations, it's one of my goals when I started this newsletter, to share what I learned. For example I wrote my experience recently on how I reduced my time with my tech in practically way, and have been trying to share it with others in the hope that they would try the same things: https://lifeapprentice.substack.com/p/11-tips-to-fight-social-media-addiction
Wow! Does this resonate!! I’m so grateful for your writing and sharing of ideas, David. I recently retired from Higher Ed and am still unwinding from the BS while investing in uplifting myself and others. Your ideas resonate and inspire. Thank you!!
I can only imagine the BS you navigated. I still do some part-time faculty work, but it's at a distance and very little interaction with the institution. (by design). I enjoy the facilitation/teaching side of things but despise the institutionalized BS.
In my first draft of this post, the 'rant' was a little longer with stats and otherwise...
I went back through and let some of those hit the cutting room floor. ;) Awesome to hear when things land well with folks.
Incredible issue! I have stopped writing social media posts, or any posts on any platform for likes or follows. I got lost in all of that for awhile... that isn't why I started this! I want to help other women like me to eat healthier and cultivate a better relationship with food and themselves - NOT to get social media likes! I now ask myself a series of questions when creating content, one of which is "am I helping at least one person every day with this content"? I pivoted and got back to the heart of why I share my knowledge. I love to learn, to do --- then share about it!
YES! Love it Melissa - and so glad to hear. It can be quite a journey and process, can't it?
I still appreciate some of the learning I got from taking the Ship 30 for 30 program (along with you) - however, I've certainly taken what I found of value and ditched a lot.
Awesome to hear about the shift in approach. Sounds quite similar to my process as well. Staying connected to one's Self in the process of sharing knowledge and information. Keeping the humanity in it.
So glad to hear it Josette - and thank-you for leaving the note!
Are you writing about your experiences (personally and/or publicly)? And curious if there's something, say in the last month, that really made a 'thud' in your thinking and mindset on this front? 🙌
That's true David. I am writing about my own recent experiences, and sharing bits and pieces of what I've been reading about to first help myself, but also anyone who might gain from these ideas/notes of mine.
I experienced challenging situations the past year which really changed my past perceptions and own beliefs. I've been trying to "rebalance" my mindset since.. if I may say.
It’s easy to lose your soul when others use psychology to make you want what they want. Such as likes and followers. Once you recognise that you want to feel good by making others feel good it gets easier to be authentic. It can be a hard lesson to learn.
I had a few shorter posts on social media on exactly that this past week - exploring the murky lines between 'persuasion' and 'manipulation'. And, wondering about different (maybe better?) ways in which marketing and even sales could be done without either of those.
And, yes, lots of 'learning' can be pretty darn uncomfortable. Painful even. (I think about my years of learning to become a proficient skier, for example) 🙌

Oh yes, I hear you loud and clear... especially the part about not being able to support folks in institutional settings. Ugh.
You're establishing an awesome foundation for your work! Keep going!!

Very cool, thanks for the note Chris. I'll stop by for a read. 🙌
Much appreciate it!

Appreciate you leaving the note! 🙌
You said it David!! I am actually diving back into some Captain's Table lessons this week :-).
Thank you for writing this! It's like these words directly spoke to my "soul". I've been thinking about many of these concerns for quite some time.
So glad to hear it Josette - and thank-you for leaving the note!

Bang on Val - and thanks for the note!
